Do you find the months slipping by without recognizing them? I’ve kept my head down and have continued working, but once in a while I’ve had to stop and think what month it is. BEHIND THE SCENES
I started a fire in Florida’s Blackwater River State Forest…a fictional fire…in HIDDEN CREED. And then last month, this happened:
You may have seen it on the national news in early May. The wildfire raged for a week with winds and low humidity fueling it. Over 2200 acres and more than a dozen homes were destroyed. It came within a half mile of my Florida home. I wasn’t there, but I kept in contact with neighbors, and despite the miles, the fear was palable.
The fire didn’t start in the Blackwater River State Forest, but it was just miles away. I told one of my neighbor friends that I never dreamed I’d need to worry about wildfires living so close to a bay. The Panhandle of Florida is known for its emerald green waters and its sugar-white beaches, but it also has thousands of acres of forest.
Another thing I didn’t realize until I lived there—it’s one of the few places in the world that you need to look out for aligators AND black bears. But in all honesty, it is as beautiful a place as wonderous.
